COVID-19 impacted all of our lives. However, it had been extremely cruel to some in desperate need. The not-for-profit organizations and several charities were collecting funds to help the most vulnerable groups in our society during these unprecedented times. In our efforts to contribute, vTech collaborated with the region’s largest hunger-relief organization, the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), and are assisting their mission of providing food to nearly 400,000 children and families who had limited access to food in our region. In the face of social distancing measures, coupled with school and workplace lockdowns resulted in the scarcity of nutritious food. Facing the wrath of the pandemic, these children and working families are deprived of one of the necessities of life, i.e., food. They needed our help all the more.
The word “pulmonary” means lung and the word “fibrosis” means scar tissue, similar to scars that you may have on your skin from an old injury or surgery.
So, in its simplest sense, pulmonary fibrosis (PF) means scarring in the lungs. But, pulmonary fibrosis is more serious than just having a scar in your lung. In PF, the scar tissue builds up in the walls of the air sacs of the lungs and eventually, the scar tissue makes it hard for oxygen to get into your blood. Low oxygen levels (and the stiff scar tissue itself) can cause you to feel short of breath, particularly when walking and exercising.
Also, pulmonary fibrosis isn’t just one disease. It is a family of more than 200 different lung diseases that all look very much alike. The PF family of lung diseases falls into an even larger group of diseases called the “interstitial lung diseases.” Some interstitial lung diseases don’t include scar tissue. When an interstitial lung disease includes scar tissue in the lung, we call it pulmonary fibrosis.

It is a grassroots movement that empowers individuals, whether they are volunteers or donors, to make a positive difference in the life of an underprivileged child by providing them with the possibility of a brighter future.
Founded in 1991, today Vibha has a network of over 800 volunteers spread across 15 Action Centers (Atlanta, Austin, Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Twin Cities – Minnesota, New York, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Washington DC) and several other cities in the US and India.

Vibha selects child development projects without discrimination towards gender, caste, religion, political affiliation or language. It follows an exhaustive evaluation process that includes analysis of quantitative metrics, such as the number of children impacted, the cost per activity or the cost per child.
