Cloud computing is growing rapidly and adoption is global, the surge in Cloud Storage adoption rate of small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) is an indisputable fact. In a recent research conducted by Clutch, a B2B research firm, revealed that over half (52%) of SMBs have started using cloud storage solutions as of October 2015.
As the adoption rate of cloud storage increases among the SMBs, it is important to understand the trends in cloud storage adoption. Since 2011, the number of SMBs integrating cloud storage into their companies has rapidly increased as nearly all of the 52% of SMBs are relatively new cloud storage users, as 46% have adopted cloud storage between 2011 and 2015.
The research also pointed out that the growth in the adoption cannot be credited to only one factor but the trend can be attributed to three major factors:
- File Sharing and Backups
The ability to collaborate through file sharing has been out of reach for small businesses until cloud storage services. Cloud storage facilitates file sharing within a small business, making daily tasks more efficient and communication more open and enabled inexpensive, manageable systems.
- Media Coverage and Hype:
There has been a significant increase in awareness of the Cloud as an option for small businesses; as the Cloud receives more media attention, it has become an accepted practice to incorporate the service into the business.
- Benefits and awareness:
The benefits of cloud storage become more prominent as the quantity of SMBs using cloud storage increases; the increased adoption is a sign of gradual growth as more businesses realize cloud storage benefits.
While the data indicates that a majority of SMBs use cloud storage, a large proportion have not migrated to the Cloud yet. A leading source of this fear arises from security and compliance concerns. However, other factors also contribute to this trepidation, including the lack of human resources available in a small business environment to implement and manage the Cloud and the assumption that the Cloud is for bigger enterprises only; which comes as a surprise that considering its money-saving benefits.
